How to check our work.
Citation
Use any figure on this page. We ask for one thing: name the source and link to this page, so a reader can see the date and the method.
Download the city data (CSV). Every city, every company the answer named, and the date.
- The city sample
- 60 US cities across 36 states. We found 566 HVAC websites in them and screened 502. Every city carried 6 to 10 candidates, 44 cities at 10, and only Alexandria, LA and Carmel, IN as low as 6. A company with offices in two cities is listed once, in the city we found it in first, and this run needed no widening pass: the list was already above the 400 site minimum before the crawl started.
- The AI answers
- One question per city, asked in Google AI Mode from a fresh logged out session on September 8, 2026, with the companies recorded in the order they were given. Answers change. This is a dated snapshot, not a ranking and not an endorsement of any company on it.
- The technology crawl
- On September 12, 2026 we opened 577 HVAC homepages and read 506 of them. 40 answered and turned the crawler away, and 31 did not hand back a page we could read. Detection reads the homepage HTML for known scripts, links and markup, so a company can use a tool without it showing here. Every share is a floor.
- The relevance gate
- A site is counted only when its own text or one of its own page links shows it does heating and cooling work. That dropped 0 of the 506 sites we read, the first time in six indexes the gate has dropped nothing, because the list was sourced with an HVAC query and HVAC companies say what they do on the homepage.
- Named versus unnamed
- The named set is the 148 crawled sites Google AI Mode listed in their own city answer. The other 358 are everyone else. Comparing the two shows what the named group happened to have that day. It does not show that any of it is why they were named, and we do not claim that anywhere.
- What we are not claiming
- Nothing here says a company with better markup will be named. This page says what this market looked like on September 8, 2026 and September 12, 2026, and which of the cheap signals are still open.
Caveats
What this data cannot tell you.
Read these before you quote a number from this page. They are the honest limits of the run, and we would rather print them than have somebody find them later.
- A same day comparison, not a cause
- The named companies were named for many reasons this crawl cannot see, including reviews, how long they have been open and who links to them. Nothing on this page is a ranking factor.
- 129 named companies have no website we could resolve
- Google AI Mode gave those company names with no link, and no first-party record we hold maps the name to a site. They are counted in the city table, which is built from names, and left out of the named versus unnamed comparison, which is built from websites. We resolved 169 sites and read 148 of them, so that comparison rests on about 49% of the companies the answer named, the lowest of our indexes so far. HVAC company names are made almost entirely of category words ("air", "heating", "cooling", "comfort", "climate"), so a guessed hostname has little distinctive left to test: the resolver verified only 10 guesses out of 139 attempts.
- 4 websites were thrown out before we published
- Every match has to pass three tests: a distinctive word of the company name in the title or the markup, address shaped evidence for the city it was named in, and at least five HVAC words on the page. 4 rows failed and lost their website, including a guessed hostname that landed on a company in a different country twice. 10 more rows failed part of the test and were kept anyway with the evidence written down, most of them because the category words leave nothing distinctive to test even though the site is plainly the right company.
- 21 named domains could not be tested at all
- Their site sits behind a bot wall or failed to answer, with no cached page to read. They stay in the comparison with the domain the resolver found, unverified.
- A DNS collision inflated the first pass of failures
- The crawl and the named-domain resolver ran at the same time and exhausted the machine's DNS resolver, so 301 of 566 sites came back looking dead on the first pass. Every failed row was re-crawled on its own and the results merged, which is where the numbers on this page come from.
- 2 company names appear in more than one city
- So the page reports 299 names across 60 answers rather than a count of distinct companies, which would quietly merge them.
- Homepage only, so every share is a floor
- A certification on an About page, a price on a financing page or a brand named only on an equipment page is not counted. Detection is by known scripts, links and text, so a new or self built tool reads as nothing at all.
- No speed numbers, on purpose
- The crawl ran from India. Response times were recorded and are not reported here, because from that distance they measure the length of the wire rather than the speed of the site.
- Small bases on some rows
- The named side is 148 sites, so several rows in the comparison rest on a handful of companies, and the site counts are printed next to every share. Quote the counts. Never say twice as likely.
- A partial robots.txt rule is not an AI block
- Most of the robots.txt files we read disallow some path for every crawler, which is what the rule a website builder ships looks like. We did not keep the rule text, so we report only the outright blocks and leave the rest alone.
