Report 14, October 2026

The Accountant AI Visibility Index.

Published by KKV Labs LLC. First published 2 Oct 2026, last updated 2 Oct 2026.

The Accountant AI Visibility Index records which CPA firms Google AI Mode named in 31 US cities, then reads 307 CPA firm homepages to see what those sites say and who is allowed to read them.

See exactly who AI recommends in your city today, and whether you are on the list.

The finding, in three sentences

Google AI Mode named 174 CPA firms across 31 cities, 5.6 per city on average and never fewer than 3.

The same day we counted 307 firm homepages. 41% of their robots.txt files block the training crawlers of OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, almost all of them on sites built by one vendor, while still letting in the search crawlers that fetch pages for answers.

The named firms carry structured data far more often, 62% against 18%. That is a reading on one day, not a cause.

The findings

Four things the data actually shows.

Each one is something you can check on your own site in a minute. Every share is read from the 307 homepages we counted on October 2, 2026.

31 of 31

AI named CPA firms in every city

We asked Google AI Mode for the best CPA in 31 US cities. Every answer named firms, 3 at the fewest and 7 at the most, 174 names in all. A firm that wants in is joining a list, not starting one.

41%

Four in ten robots.txt files block the AI training crawlers

117 of the 286 robots.txt files we read block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. 113 of them are sites built by one vendor, CPA Site Solutions, and every one of its sites we read does it. Those same files still let in the search crawlers that fetch a page when someone asks a question: OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot and Perplexity-User (re-read on 2 October 2026). Not one of the 286 files shuts out Google-Extended.

62% and 18%

The named firms describe themselves to machines

Structured data, the hidden labels that tell a machine what a page is about, sits on 62% of the named firms' homepages and 18% of the rest. The AccountingService type made for this trade is on 15% against 2%. It is the widest gap in this crawl, and a same day reading, not a cause.

474

The homepages say very little

The median CPA homepage carries 474 words, and 24% carry fewer than 300. Review proof is almost absent: 2% show a review widget or badge, and 2 of 307 print a review count.

The list is the whole answer for that question on that day, in the order it was given. It is not a ranking and not a review of any firm.

How to check our work.

Citation

Use any figure on this page. We ask for one thing: name KKV Labs as the source and link to this page, so a reader can see the date and the method.

Download the city data (CSV). Every city, every firm the answer named, and the date.

The city sample
31 US cities across 18 states. We found 105 CPA firm websites in them, 1 to 7 per city, and the screener opened and read 101. That is the sample behind the city table.
The AI answers
One question per city, "best CPA in [City] [State]", asked in Google AI Mode from a fresh logged out session on October 2, 2026. We wrote down every firm the answer named, in the order it named them. Answers change, so this is a dated snapshot, not a ranking.
The homepage crawl
On the same day we opened 340 CPA firm homepages and counted 307. 132 are firms in the 31 index cities, including the named firms' own sites. The other 175 come from a list of CPA firms we built in July 2026, in towns outside those cities, added to widen the crawl. 9 sites turned the crawler away and 23 gave back nothing we could use.
What the crawler reads
The homepage HTML and the robots.txt file: known scripts, links, markup and words. A firm can use a tool without it showing here, so every share is a floor. A site is counted only when its own words or links show accounting work, which dropped 1 of 308.
Named versus unnamed
The named group is the 65 counted sites whose firm Google AI Mode listed in its own city's answer. The other 242 are everyone else. The comparison shows what the named group happened to have. It does not show why they were named, and this page never says it does.
How a city was coloured
By the length of the answer alone: three or more firms named is open. All 31 cities named three or more, so every city in this index is open.

Caveats

What this data cannot tell you.

Read these before you quote a number from this page. They are the limits of the run, printed here so nobody has to find them later.

A same day comparison, not a cause
Firms get named for reasons a homepage crawl cannot see: their Google profile, reviews elsewhere, years in town, size and who links to them. Nothing on this page is a ranking factor, and nothing on it is about the quality of any firm's work.
Everyone else includes firms outside the index cities
175 of the 242 unnamed sites are firms in other towns, from our July 2026 list. Nobody asked AI about their towns, so they were never in a position to be named. They make the crawl bigger and the comparison looser.
The robots.txt reading has limits
We record whether a robots.txt names a crawler in a rule that shuts it out. For the CPA Site Solutions sites we also re-read every robots.txt on 2 Oct 2026: each one lets in OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot and Perplexity-User and shuts out the crawlers it does not name. We did not run that second check on the other sites.
108 named firms have no website we could match
The answers gave 174 firm names. We matched a website to 66 of them and read 65 distinct sites. The rest stay in the city table, which is built from names, and are left out of the named versus unnamed comparison, which is built from websites.
25 matches were thrown out before we published
Every matched site was checked by hand against the name the answer gave. A match was removed when it was a different firm, or when the page could not be read to check it. We never kept a guess we could not confirm.
A few names appear in more than one city
3 of the 174 names repeat a name already given in another city of the same state: Henry & Peters, PC in Longview and Tyler; Sexton & Schnoll in Gainesville and Ocala; Yeo & Yeo CPAs & Advisors in Midland and Saginaw. The page counts names across answers, not separate firms.
Small bases on some rows
The named group is 65 sites, so one firm moves a named share by about 2 points. Quote the shares with their site counts, and never as twice as likely.

Questions

What people ask about this data.

What is the Accountant AI Visibility Index?
A first-party count of accountant AI visibility: which CPA firms Google AI Mode named in 31 US cities, and what the crawler could read on 307 CPA firm homepages on October 2, 2026. Nothing is bought, licensed or estimated.
Do CPA firm websites block ChatGPT?
41% of the robots.txt files we read block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, the crawlers that collect pages for those companies. 113 of the 117 are sites built by CPA Site Solutions, and every one of those still lets in OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, the agents ChatGPT uses to fetch a page for an answer. So on those sites ChatGPT search can still read the page. For any other site, open your own robots.txt and check both kinds of crawler.
What did the named firms have that others did not?
Mostly structured data. It is on 62% of the named firms' homepages and 18% of the rest. Google Analytics 4 is on 28% against 10%. That is a comparison on one day, not a cause.
Does saying CPA or listing credentials help a firm get named by AI?
We cannot see that it does. CPA is written on 86% of the named firms' homepages and 84% of the rest, almost level. AICPA membership is stated on 11% against 7%. Clients look for these, so they belong on the page, but they did not tell the groups apart.
Which client portals do CPA firms use?
53% of the homepages say there is a secure client portal, and 18% show a portal vendor we could detect. The most common were ShareFile at 6%, Thomson Reuters NetClient or Onvio portal at 3% and SmartVault at 2%. A portal behind a login button is not counted, so these are floors.
Can I cite these numbers?
Yes, free of charge. Name KKV Labs as the source and link to this report so your reader can see the date and the method. The city table is on the page as a CSV file too.
Is a firm named in the answer better than one that is not?
No, and we do not say that anywhere. The lists are a dated snapshot of one AI answer on one day. They are not rankings, not endorsements and not a judgement of anybody's work.
