What AI-named businesses do differently, read across 3,889 homepages in six industries: the 12 widest, most consistent gaps between the 1,012 sites Google AI Mode named and the 2,877 it did not, and 8 signals that do not separate them at all.

Named businesses are not winning on any single silver bullet. Read across 3,889 homepages in six industries, the widest and most consistent gap between the 1,012 sites Google AI Mode named and the 2,877 it did not is Google Tag Manager installed, +12.5 points, in all six industries.

The rest of the top 12 is the same story: a blog or news section, a review count printed on the homepage, a current copyright year, a click to call phone link, structured data, a tracking pixel. Basic marketing hygiene and a site that gets touched at least once a year, not a trick.

Just as telling is what does not separate the two groups. Https, a mobile viewport tag, Google Analytics 4, saying "near me" on the page, stating a credential in prose, and FAQ schema specifically (as opposed to just having an FAQ) are all within 3 points of each other, named against unnamed. This is a same-day comparison, not a cause: named businesses were named for reasons this crawl cannot see.

The 12 largest gaps

Where named sites pull ahead.

Gap is named share minus unnamed share, in percentage points, averaged across the industries where the signal exists. A signal is compared only when its exact label text appears in at least 4 of the 6 industry crawls, since each crawl defines its own signal set.

The 8 signals with no real gap

Things that do not separate the two.

Within 3 points either way. Most of these are table stakes almost every site already has, which is exactly why they cannot be what decides who gets named.

A combined check

Google Business link and any schema, together.

Share of sites carrying both a Google Maps or Business Profile link and any JSON-LD structured data on the homepage, at once. Named sites lead everywhere, but only by 2 to 6 points, and most sites (named and unnamed) still fall short of carrying both.

  • Dentists67.9%65.6%

  • Chiropractors55.2%53%
  • HVAC60.1%56.7%

Named share, then unnamed share.

The other side of the story

Named with none of the top 5.

Share of named sites carrying zero of the five widest gap signals (Google Tag Manager, a blog, a review count shown, copyright year 2026, a click to call link). Med spas' crawler never captured a review count or a phone link field, so its figure uses only the 3 signals it could measure. Outside med spas this is rare but not zero: being named is not only about the site.

  • Med spas(3 of 5 signals applicable)98 of 341 (28.7%)
  • Roofers(5 of 5 signals applicable)4 of 147 (2.7%)
  • Dentists(5 of 5 signals applicable)2 of 84 (2.4%)

  • Chiropractors(5 of 5 signals applicable)6 of 105 (5.7%)
  • HVAC(5 of 5 signals applicable)1 of 148 (0.7%)

Method

How this comparison is built.

The six crawls
Built from the six stack crawls each AI Visibility Index already publishes: med spas, roofers, dentists, personal injury law firms, chiropractors and HVAC companies, crawled 2026-09-10 to 2026-09-12 from India. 3,889 homepages read in total.
Named and unnamed
"Named" is the sites Google AI Mode named in its city answer for that industry on the day of the crawl; "unnamed" is the rest of the sites read. 1,012 named, 2,877 unnamed, across all six industries.
Which signals are compared
A signal is compared here only when its exact label text appears in at least 4 of the 6 industry files, since each crawl defines its own signal set. 21 signals cleared that bar; the 12 largest gaps and the 8 with no gap are all of them, sorted by size.
How the gap is computed
Gap is named share minus unnamed share, in percentage points, averaged across the industries where the signal exists. A positive gap means named sites carry the signal more often.
Same-day comparison, not a cause
This is a same-day reading of what named and unnamed sites carry, not an experiment and not a claim that adding any one signal gets a business named. Named businesses were named for reasons this crawl cannot see, and it reads the homepage only: a signal one click deeper is invisible to it.
What we are not claiming
Nothing here says an unnamed business is worse than a named one, or that any single fix guarantees a result. It says what the gap looks like today, across six industries and over 3,800 homepages, so a business can spend its time on the things that actually separate the two groups instead of the ones that do not.

What to do first

Start with the widest gaps.

Drawn only from the top of the 12 largest gaps above. No promise that doing these gets a business named: they are what separates the two groups today, not a guarantee.

  1. 1. Install Google Tag Manager

The widest and most consistent gap of the 12, +12.5 points named-higher in all six industries. It is a free tag, and installing it is a same-day fix on almost any website platform.

  2. 2. Print a review count on the homepage

+7.2 points named-higher, in the five industries where this crawl could measure it. A number next to the business name gives an answer engine something concrete to quote.

  3. 3. Update the footer copyright year

+6.2 points named-higher, and the flip side (copyright year 2023 or older) is the one gap in the top 12 that runs the other way, -1.8 points unnamed-higher. It costs nothing to fix and it is the cheapest signal that a site is still maintained.

Questions

What people ask about this study.

What is this study measuring?
Whether the sites Google AI Mode named in its city answer carry different signals than the sites it did not, across six industries: med spas, roofers, dentists, personal injury law firms, chiropractors and HVAC companies. 3,889 homepages read, 1,012 named and 2,877 unnamed.
Does this prove any of these signals cause a business to get named?
No. This is a same-day comparison, not a cause: named businesses were named for reasons this crawl cannot see, and the crawl reads the homepage only. It says what the gap looks like today, not what made it.
Why do https and a mobile viewport tag not show up as gaps?
Because almost every site already has them, named or not. A signal that is already universal cannot be what separates the two groups. The 8 signals with no real gap on this page are exactly that: table stakes, not differentiators.
Can I cite these numbers?
