Where AI gets its answers about local businesses: we read the citations behind 123 Google AI Mode answers, 20 to 21 cities in each of 6 local-service industries, and recorded every domain the answer actually linked to alongside the businesses it named.

Short answer

The business's own site and its Google Business Profile are the two citations every industry can count on. Both sit at 70 percent or higher in every industry in this sample, and Google profile is at 90 percent or higher in all six.

Past those two, the directory that actually shows up changes by trade. Justia and Super Lawyers dominate law firm answers, Zocdoc and Healthgrades show up for dentists and chiropractors, Angi and Thumbtack show up for roofers, and Reddit turns up in some share of every industry's answers. No single named directory beat the business's own site inside its own industry, not even Justia at 61.9 percent of law firm answers against 81.0 percent for the firms' own sites.

This is a same-sample reading of 123 answers captured on one day, not a census of every AI answer ever given. Treat every percentage as plus or minus roughly one answer's worth of noise at this sample size, about 5 points at n=20.

By industry

The two everyone needs, and the one that differs.

Share is the percent of captured answers citing at least one link of that type. An answer can cite more than one type, so a row does not sum to 100. The other columns are the top 3 named source types beyond Google profile, the business's own site, Yelp and the unclassified "other directory" catch-all bucket.

Overall

The top 15 domains, across every industry.

Counted across all 123 answers in every industry. google.com/maps leads by a wide margin, because a local pack answer almost always links at least one business's Google Business Profile.

What it means

Get the two universal ones right first.

Every industry in this sample needs the same two things: a business site an AI Mode answer can actually link to, and a Google Business Profile the answer can point at from the local pack. Miss either one and the answer has one fewer citation to hand a reader, regardless of trade.

The directory that matters beyond those two is not the same directory for everyone. Law firms live and die by Justia and Super Lawyers, the two named sources with the highest reach in this entire dataset. Dentists and chiropractors share Zocdoc and Healthgrades, the booking-and-review platforms patients actually use to pick a provider. Roofers see Angi and Thumbtack, the trades platforms homeowners already use to find a contractor. Reddit shows up in every single industry's citations, at a small but non-zero share, which says an AI answer is willing to cite an unmoderated forum thread over having nothing else to point to.

None of this is a ranking signal you can buy. It is a map of where the answer already looks. A business that is missing from its industry's one or two named directories is not invisible to AI, but it is relying entirely on its own site and its Google profile to carry the whole citation, in a market where the named directory is doing real work for its competitors.

Method

How to check our work.

Citation

Use any figure on this page. We ask for one thing: name the source and link to this page, so a reader can see the date and the method.

The capture
123 answers, one query per city, "best <industry singular> in <City, State>," asked in Google AI Mode from the account owner's own Chrome (the in-app browser throttled on a prior attempt), one query every 10 to 30 seconds. Every industry reached 20 or 21 cities. Capture date 15 Sep 2026 for every city in this run.
Separating the answer from Google's own page chrome
AI Mode's page always carries a fixed set of Google utility links (sign out, search personalization, Travel and Finance shortcuts, Policies, Support articles, the map scaffolding) regardless of the query. These were excluded by an explicit allowlist of Google host and path prefixes, not by where the link sits on the page, because the collection step kept only a deduped set of link tokens, not their position in the DOM. google.com/maps and maps.google.com/maps were deliberately kept out of that exclusion list and counted as citations, since a Maps link points at a specific business named in the answer, not at page chrome.
Domain classification
Every surviving link token's host is matched against a fixed list of directory and community domains (Yelp, Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Angi, HomeAdvisor, BBB, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, YouTube, Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers), a small news-domain list, or the business's own domain, matched against the business names Google itself named for that city. Anything left over is bucketed as an unclassified other directory or site.
Sample size, read this before you quote a row
20 to 21 cities per industry is a moderate, directional sample. Treat every percentage as plus or minus roughly one answer's worth of noise, about 5 points at n=20. A domain counted once in a 20-city sample can look larger or smaller than its true share in a bigger run; the counts, not just the percentages, are printed in every table on this page so a reader can judge the base for themselves.
What we are not claiming
This page does not say a citation is a ranking factor, or that a business missing from a directory is invisible to AI. It says which domains one set of AI Mode answers actually pointed to, on one day, across six industries.

Questions

What people ask about this data.

Where does this data come from?
From our own screening. We asked Google AI Mode "best <industry> in <city>" once per city, from a fresh session, and read every link an answer actually pointed to, across 20 to 21 cities in each of 6 industries, 123 answers in total. Nothing is bought, licensed or estimated.
Does citing a directory help a business get named by AI?
We cannot see that in this data. This page counts what an answer already cited, not why it cited it. A business could carry a Justia profile and still not be named, or be named without one. The map here is where citations point, not a ranking recipe.
Why does the directory that matters change by industry?
Because each industry already has its own established review or booking platform that patients or homeowners actually use: Justia and Super Lawyers for legal research, Zocdoc and Healthgrades for booking a medical or dental appointment, Angi and Thumbtack for hiring a contractor. An AI answer citing what people already use to make this exact decision is not surprising once you see the pattern industry by industry.
Can I cite these numbers?
