The pattern
Why one name is luck.
There is room in the answer. In all 60 cities, Google AI Mode named at least 3 HVAC companies, and 5 on average. In a separate set of 21 HVAC answers captured on September 15, 2026, 100% pointed at a Google profile, 95% at another directory or site, and 90% at the company's own website. So the answer reads more than one place, and the question decides which.
Some things on a homepage do not split the named sites from the rest at all. A BBB seal is on 20% of named sites and 20% of the rest. Family owned is 47% against 47%. Licensed and insured is 21% against 22%. Carrier is named on 10% against 10%.
The pages that answer one question split them more. A financing page is linked on 68% of named sites against 47% of the rest, a plan page 42% against 27%, and a blog 72% against 51%. This is a count from one day, not proof that one thing causes the other. It does show why a company named as the best HVAC company can still be missing when someone asks about financing or a plan: those answers come from pages it may not have.
