Free roofing playbook: getting named

How to get roofing leads from ChatGPT for free

Here is how to get roofing leads from ChatGPT for free: be one of the roofers the answer names when a homeowner in your town asks for one. In 20 city answers we captured on September 15, 2026, 100% pointed at the roofing company's own website and 95% pointed at its Google Business Profile. You own both of those. Neither costs a dollar to fix. Below are 10 roofing jobs, in order, that you can do yourself in 90 days.

What you need

  • A website you can change, or a person who can change it for you
  • Your Google Business Profile sign in
  • Before and after photos from your last ten roofs
  • Your licence number, your insurer, and the roofing brand that approves you

Time: about 30 minutes a week, for 90 days. Cost: nothing. Every step below is free to do yourself.

Go straight to the 10 steps

Start here

Why a roofer can win this.

Every number here is counted from our own files when this page is built, or linked to where it came from.

We asked Google AI Mode "best roofer in [city]" in 60 US cities on September 10, 2026. Every city came back with real roofing company names. The answer named 4.6 roofers in the average city, and in 59 of those 60 cities no single roofing company was held up as the best one. The list is short, and in almost every town it is not settled yet.

A second study looked at where those roofing answers get their facts. In 20 city answers captured on September 15, 2026, the roofer's own website was pointed at in 100% of them, a Google Business Profile in 95%, and some other directory or local site in 90%. Angi came up in 35%, Yelp in 35%, Reddit in 20% and Thumbtack in 20%. The two things a roofer owns outright are the two the answer leans on hardest.

The plan

Ten roofing jobs, in order.

One job a week for ten weeks. Each one says what to do on your roofing site or your profile, and how to tell it worked.

  1. 01

Put the roof work and the towns in the first line of your home page

Write one line at the very top. Name the roof work you sell and the towns your trucks drive to, the way you would say it to a neighbour. Something like "Roof repair, roof replacement and storm damage work in Akron, Ohio and the towns around it". A machine reads that line first, and in our 20 answer study the roofer's own site was pointed at in 100% of the answers, more than anything else.

How to check it workedOpen your home page on a phone. A stranger should be able to say what roof work you do and which town in 5 seconds.

  2. 02

Give every roof job and every town its own page

One page for roof repair, one for roof replacement, one for storm and hail damage, one for metal, one for flat or commercial roofs. Then one page for each town you drive to, with the town in the heading. Naming the work is not enough on its own: of the 520 roofing home pages we read on September 11, 2026, 80% already mention roof repair and 76% mention replacement. Only 42% link a page that says which towns they actually cover.

How to check it workedCount your pages. One for every roof job you sell, and one for every town on the truck's route.

  3. 03

Fill in your Google Business Profile the way a roofing one has to be

A roofer has no shop window, so this listing does the job a shop front would. Set the service area to the towns you drive to, choose roofing contractor as the main kind of business, and load photos of finished roofs rather than the truck. Keep the name, the street and the phone letter for letter the same as your website, because a small difference makes a machine unsure it is one company. This listing was pointed at in 95% of the 20 answers we captured on September 15, 2026.

How to check it workedSearch your own company name. The profile and the site should show the same name, the same street and the same phone.

  4. 04

Get listed where the roofing answers already point

Claim these in the order the answers use them. Your own site came up in 100% of the 20 answers, a Google Business Profile in 95%, another directory or local site in 90%. Angi came up in 35%, Yelp in 35%, Thumbtack in 20% and Reddit in 20%. Then add the free roofing brand lists a homeowner is sent to, such as Owens Corning's contractor finder and CertainTeed's Find A Pro. Claim the free spot on each one and pay for none of them yet.

How to check it workedSearch your company name and your town together. Your own site and your Google profile should both be on the first screen.

  5. 05

Answer the eight questions a homeowner asks before anyone goes up the ladder

They ask the same eight things: what a new roof costs, whether you are licensed and insured, whether you have a real office nearby, whether the crew is yours or hired in, which roofing brand backs you, what you do after a storm, who deals with the insurance claim, and how long the warranty runs. Those are the questions Google itself shows under a roofing search, and the longest public list we found runs to 105 roofing questions. Put each one on your site as a question, then answer it in two or three plain lines.

How to check it worked48% of the 520 roofing home pages we read carry a question and answer block. Open yours and check the roof cost question and the insurance claim question are both answered.

  6. 07

Show the before and after photos from the tear-off, with the town and the month

Shoot the roof before the tear-off starts and again when the last shingle is nailed down. Put the pair on that town's page, not all in one big gallery. Under each pair write one line: the town, the kind of roof, the month, and the storm if there was one. That is proof a homeowner reads and a fact a machine can repeat.

How to check it workedEvery town page carries at least three before and after pairs, and each pair names the town under it.

  7. 08

Ask for the review at the final walk-through, then again when the insurance check clears

A roof is not a haircut. You get one chance a year with each homeowner, so ask at the two moments they are happiest. The first is the final walk-through, standing in the drive looking up at the new roof. The second is the day the insurance check clears. Then put the count on your own home page: only 22% of the 520 roofing home pages we read show one, and the middle one of those shows 240 reviews.

How to check it workedCount your new reviews at the end of the month. Zero means nobody asked on either day, and that is the thing to fix.

  8. 09

Say on the home page that a homeowner can pay for the roof over time

We read 520 roofing home pages on September 11, 2026 and split them into the roofers AI named and everybody else. The biggest gap you can close in one afternoon: 64% of the named roofers say on the home page that they offer payment plans or financing, against 48% of the rest. That is a same day count of what the two groups of roofing sites carry, not proof that one causes the other. A new roof runs about $10,000 and most land between $7,500 and $14,000 (Fixr's roof replacement cost page, read 21 September 2026), so if you do offer a plan, say so in words near the top.

How to check it workedSearch your home page for "financing" or "payment plan". No result means you have found your next half hour.

  9. 10

Ask the answer engine yourself every 30 days and write the roofers down

Once a month, open ChatGPT in a window where you are not signed in. Ask it twice: "best roofer in my town", then "best roofer in my town for storm damage", with your real town both times. Write down every roofing company it names, with the date, in one file. In our own 60 city run the answer named 4.6 roofers in the average city, so it is a short list to keep.

How to check it workedAfter 90 days you hold three dated lists. Watch for two things: your own name showing up, and the same rival roofers repeating.

Our own numbers on this page: 60 US cities asked "best roofer in [city]" in Google AI Mode on September 10, 2026; 520 roofing home pages read by machine on September 11, 2026; and a separate study of 20 city answers captured on September 15, 2026 that recorded every link the answer pointed at. Every figure above is counted from those files when this page is built. Anything from outside our own work is linked where it is used, with the site named. Published by KKV Labs LLC.

Questions

What homeowners ask before they call.

These are the questions Google shows under a roofing search. Answer them on your own site and you are answering the machine as well as the homeowner.

Is my roofer licensed and insured?
Homeowners ask this before they let a crew on the roof, and most roofing sites answer it weakly. 36% of the 520 roofing home pages we read say "licensed and insured" somewhere, but only 14% print an actual licence number. Print the number, the state that issued it, and the name of your insurer. A number can be checked, and a phrase cannot.
Is the roofer approved by a roofing brand like GAF or Owens Corning?
Brand approval is one of the few facts about a roofer a homeowner can check on somebody else's website, so it is worth stating plainly. Of the 520 roofing home pages we read on September 11, 2026, 44% name a roofing brand at all and 25% say which approval level they hold. GAF is named on 25% of pages, Owens Corning on 18% and CertainTeed on 16%. Write your brand and your level out in words, not only inside a badge picture a machine cannot read.
Is the roofer local, with an office I can find later?
A roof comes with a long warranty, so a homeowner wants to know somebody will still be there in ten years. Put a real street address and a phone number on every page, and make them match your Google Business Profile exactly. That profile was pointed at in 95% of the 20 AI answers we captured on September 15, 2026, second only to the roofing company's own website.
How long is the new roof under warranty?
There are two warranties on a roof and homeowners mix them up: the one the roofing brand gives on the shingles, and the one you give on the work. 61% of the 520 roofing home pages we read mention a warranty at all, usually in one vague line. Say both, with the years, in plain words on the page for that job type.
