The findings
Four things the data actually says.
Each one is a check you can run on your own site in a minute. Every share is read from the 520 homepages we could open on September 11, 2026.
26% and 25%
The manufacturer badge does not sort the two groups
A certification tier is the badge this trade sells itself on. 26% of the roofing companies the answer named claim one, and 25% of everyone else claims one too. On this day, in this market, it told the two groups apart by one point.

38%
Most of the markup describes the website, not the business
85% of the homepages we read carry structured data. 38% use it to say the business is a roofing contractor, and 26% carry only the website record the theme ships. Naming the business type is a one line change on most sites.

42%
An llms.txt file is mostly a builder default
42% of the sites we read serve an llms.txt file, and every Duda site we read has one, 57 of 57 and every Wix site we read has one, 30 of 30. That is 87 of the 216 llms.txt files in this market, written by the builder rather than chosen by the company. Nobody should be sold that file as a strategy.

3%
Roofers are not shutting AI crawlers out
The most blocked AI crawler in this market is named in a blocking rule on 3% of the robots.txt files we read, and two of the eight we checked are blocked nowhere at all. Getting read is not the problem here, so nothing needs unblocking.

The answers
How many roofers make the answer.
We asked Google AI Mode the same question in every city: who is the best roofer here. It came back with names in all 60 of them, and the list was short every single time.
A short list is the finding. Every roofing company outside it is invisible for that question on that day, whatever it spends on ads.

The stack
What the sites actually run.
Read from the homepage on September 11, 2026. A site runs on one platform, so these rows do not overlap and the column adds up to the sites we read. Anything we could not place, and any platform too small to report on its own, is grouped as other or not detected.
58%
of the homepages we read are on WordPress, at 300 of 520 sites. That is the biggest platform this crawl could put a name to. The platform decides how cheap the structured data work is, and on most of them it is a plugin and an afternoon.

Named versus unnamed
What the named roofers had that day.
This is a comparison on the day of the crawl, not a cause. It shows what the named roofing companies happened to have, not what got them named.

| Only boilerplate schema (WebSite or Organization, no business type) | 33% | 23% |

Named roofers are the 147 crawled sites Google AI Mode listed in their own city answer the day before the crawl. Everyone else is the other 373. WordPress, Gutenberg and Elementor move together in this table because the last two are WordPress features, so read them as one reading rather than three.

Business schema is the one check where the two groups sit on the same number: 60% of the named companies carry it and 60% of everyone else does. That makes it open ground rather than catching up.

Two facts a homeowner checks first are the rarest things on a roofing homepage: a price appears on 15% of the sites we read and a licence number on 14%. Both are cheap to publish and both are things a homeowner checks before they pick up the phone.
Words and weight are counted from the HTML our crawler downloaded, not from a browser that ran the page. A site that builds its text with JavaScript therefore reads thinner here than it looks to a visitor. Both halves of the named comparison were measured the same way on the same day, which is what makes that gap the useful part.

Source: KKV Labs screening and Google AI Mode answers captured September 10, 2026. 60 cities, 277 company names. Every city had at least 3 companies named, so the answer column does not sort these cities. Read the names. Download the city data (CSV). What we do for roofing companies.

Citation
Use any figure on this page. We ask for one thing: name the source and link to this page, so a reader can see the date and the method.
Download the city data (CSV). Every city, every company the answer named, and the date.
- The city sample
- 60 US cities across 36 states. We found 562 roofing websites in them and screened 460. This is not a random sample of all US roofers: it is the markets we were looking at, which lean toward small and mid size cities.
- The AI answers
- One question per city, asked in Google AI Mode from a fresh logged out session on September 10, 2026, with the companies recorded in the order they were given. Answers change. This is a dated snapshot, not a ranking and not an endorsement of any company on it.
- The technology crawl
- On September 11, 2026 we opened 569 roofing company homepages and read 520 of them. 33 answered and turned the crawler away, and 16 did not answer at all. Detection reads the homepage HTML for known scripts, links and markup, so a company can use a tool without it showing here. Every share is a floor.
- Named versus unnamed
- The named set is the 147 crawled sites Google AI Mode listed in their own city answer the day before the crawl. The other 373 are everyone else. Comparing the two shows what the named group happened to have that day. It does not show that any of it is why they were named, and we do not claim that anywhere.
- What we are not claiming
- Nothing here says a company with better markup will be named, or that a named company is better at roofing than one that is not on the list. It says what this market looked like on two days in September 2026, and which of the cheap signals are still open.
Caveats
What this data cannot tell you.
Read these before you quote a number from this page. They are the honest limits of the run, and we would rather print them than have somebody find them later.
- A same day comparison, not a cause
- The named companies were named for many reasons this crawl cannot see, including reviews, how long they have traded and who links to them locally. Nothing on this page is a ranking factor.
- 115 named companies have no website we could resolve
- Google AI Mode gave those company names with no link, and no first-party record we hold maps the name to a site. They are counted in the city table, which is built from names, and left out of the named versus unnamed comparison, which is built from websites. We resolved 159 sites and read 147 of them, so that comparison rests on about half of the companies the answer named.
- Homepage only, so every share is a floor
- A certification on an About page, a price on a cost page or a quote tool behind a button is not counted. Detection is by known scripts, links and text, so a new or self built tool reads as nothing at all.
- No speed numbers, on purpose
- The crawl ran from India. Response times were recorded and are not reported here, because from that distance they measure the length of the wire rather than the speed of the site.
- Walled sites are counted apart from broken ones
- 33 sites answered and refused the crawler, and 16 did not answer at all. Only the first group is a blocked number. Bot walls cluster on certain hosts, so their absence could tilt the platform mix.
- The tier does not sort these cities
- Every one of the 60 cities had at least 3 companies named, so 59 come out green and 1 comes out yellow. Green is not a selective finding for roofing. Read the company list, not the colour.
- Small bases on some rows
- Several named versus unnamed rows rest on a small number of the 147 named sites, so the site counts are printed next to every share. Quote the counts. Never say twice as likely.
- A partial robots.txt rule is not an AI block
- About half of the robots.txt files we read disallow some path for every crawler, which is what a default admin rule looks like. We did not keep the rule text, so we report only the outright blocks and leave the rest alone.
