Why your roofing website is invisible to AI, and the 30-minute fix

Here is why your roofing website is invisible to AI, and the 30-minute fix: the roof facts a machine needs are either locked inside pictures, missing from the code, or behind a file that waves the reader away. We read 520 roofing home pages by machine on September 11, 2026. Only 38% of them tell a machine the site belongs to a roofing contractor. None of the ten checks below need code from you, and none need a new website. Below are 10 jobs you can do yourself in 90 days.

What you need

  • Your website address, and the email of whoever can change it
  • One hour of that person's time, booked once, not a new site
  • A browser on a laptop, so you can see the page and the files behind it
  • 30 minutes a week for 90 days, and no money

Time: about 30 minutes a week, for 90 days. Cost: nothing. Every step below is free to do yourself.

Why this works

Your roofing site is paperwork a machine reads.

Every number here is counted from our own files when this page is built, or linked to where it came from.

An AI answer has to quote something, and for a roofer it quotes your own site. In the 20 city answers we captured on September 15, 2026, the roofing company's own website was pointed at in 100% of them. Nothing else in those roofing answers came close. So your roofing page is not a brochure any more. It is the paperwork a machine reads before it decides whether to say your name.

Most roofing sites hand that machine very little. Of the 520 roofing home pages we read on September 11, 2026, 85% carry some code that describes the business, but only 38% carry the label that says roofing contractor, and 26% carry nothing but boilerplate that names no trade at all. Only 15% mark up their question block, while 48% have questions on the page a human can read. The gap between what a person sees and what a machine gets is the whole problem, and it is a settings job, not a rebuild.

The plan

Ten checks on the code behind your roofing site.

No code from you and no new roofing website. Most of these are one line in an email to whoever runs your roofing site, and each says how to tell it worked.

  1. 01

Find out what your roofing site is built on, and who can change it

Send one email today: what is the site built on, who has the login, and what does a small change cost. Most roofing sites are one of three things. Of the 520 roofing sites we read, 58% run on WordPress, 11% on Duda and 6% on Wix. This matters because the next nine steps are ten-minute jobs on some of those and a support ticket on others.

How to check it workedYou have a written reply naming the platform, the person, and what a small change costs.

  2. 02

Check the roof words on your home page are really words

Drag your mouse across the big line at the top of your home page. If the words highlight in blue, they are text. If nothing highlights, that headline is a picture, and a machine reads nothing there. The same test works on the fancy banner that slides through photos of finished roofs. Designers love putting "Roof repair and replacement in your town" inside an image, and that sentence may as well not exist.

How to check it workedEvery line that says what roof work you do, and where, highlights in blue when you drag over it.

  3. 03

Count the words on the page, because thin pages get skipped

Copy the whole roofing home page into a word counter. The middle roofing home page we read carries 1,257 words, and the sites AI named carry 1,385 against 1,204 for the rest. Only 6% of the 520 sit under 300 words, so a nearly empty page really is unusual. If yours is short, the missing words are almost always the boring ones: what a tear-off involves, what a storm inspection covers, how long a job takes.

How to check it workedThe home page count is over 1,000 words, and every hundred of them says something a homeowner asked you last month.

  4. 04

Ask your web person for the roofing contractor label in the code

Copy this into an email: "Please add RoofingContractor schema to our site, with our name, address, phone, hours and service area, and keep it in step with our Google profile." That is the whole request. Of the 520 sites we read, 85% have some code like this and only 38% use the roofing one, while 26% carry only a blank label that names no trade. Sites AI named carry structured code more often than the rest, 93% against 82%, which is a same day count and not proof of cause.

How to check it workedPaste your home page address into Google's own Rich Results Test and look for the words roofing contractor.

  5. 05

Ask for your question block to be marked up, not just typed

If your site has a questions section, it is probably typed as plain text. Ask for it to be marked as an FAQ in the code. Copy this: "Please wrap our FAQ in FAQPage schema, one entry per question." Of the 520 roofing home pages, 48% show questions a person can read but only 15% mark them up so a machine can lift them. That gap is the cheapest one on this page to close.

How to check it workedThe Rich Results Test lists your questions back to you, one by one.

  6. 06

Ask for each roof job to be marked as a service

Same email, one more line: "Please add Service schema for roof repair, roof replacement, storm and hail damage, metal roofing, flat roofing, gutters and roof inspection, each tied to our service area." Only 18% of the 520 sites carry service markup of any kind. This is what turns "we do roofs" into a list a machine can match against a homeowner asking about a metal roof or a hail claim.

How to check it workedAsk for a screenshot of the code, and count that every roof job you sell appears in it by name.

  7. 07

Read your robots file and make sure it is not waving the AI readers away

Type your website address into a browser and add /robots.txt at the end. It is a plain text file, and you are looking for lines that say Disallow under names like GPTBot or Google-Extended. Of the 502 roofing sites where we could read that file, only 3% blocked GPTBot outright and none blocked PerplexityBot, but half carry partial rules that some of them never meant to set. Plug-ins and hosts add these lines without asking.

How to check it workedYou have read your own robots file top to bottom, and you can say out loud which readers are blocked.

  8. 08

Add the plain page list that AI readers look for

There is a simple text file called llms.txt that lists your pages and what each one is about. Ask for it, or switch it on if your platform makes one. Of the 520 roofing sites we read, 42% already have one, and every Duda and every Wix site we read has one, because those builders add it on their own. If you are on WordPress, it is a five-minute job for whoever runs your roofing site, and it costs nothing.

How to check it workedYour site address plus /llms.txt opens a plain list with your roof job pages and your town pages on it.

  9. 10

Test it the way a homeowner would, and keep the answer

Copy your home page text, paste it into ChatGPT, and ask three questions: what does this company do, which towns does it cover, and who licenses it. If the answer is vague, the page is vague, and you have just found next week's job. Keep the reply in a file with the date. Also ask your web person to keep the page light, since the middle roofing page we read weighs 219 KB and heavy pages drop readers.

How to check it workedYou hold three dated answers, and the newest one names your roof work, your towns and your licence without guessing.

Our own numbers on this page: 60 US cities asked "best roofer in [city]" in Google AI Mode on September 10, 2026; 520 roofing home pages read by machine on September 11, 2026; and a separate study of 20 city answers captured on September 15, 2026 that recorded every link the answer pointed at. Every one of the 60 cities in the list was asked the same question in Google AI Mode on September 10, 2026: who is the best roofer here. This shows you the roofing companies that answer named back. It is one answer on one day, not a ranking.

Pick a city to see the roofing companies AI named there, and the date we captured the answer. The three answers you can get are below, with how many of the screened cities gave each one.

What the three answers mean

  • GREEN59 of 60Several businesses named, none called the best. The door is open.
  • YELLOW1 of 60Several named, but the answer puts one of them ahead.
  • RED0 of 60One business only, or nobody named. The hardest kind of market.

Questions

What roofers ask about the website.

These are the questions roofing owners type about their own site and AI, answered in the same plain words as the steps above.

Does my roofing website need schema markup?
It needs the one line of code that says roofing contractor, and most roofing sites do not have it. Of the 520 roofing homepages we read, 85% carry some structured data but only 38% say what trade they are in.
How do I get my roofing company to show up in ChatGPT?
Make the facts readable first, because the answer has to quote something. In 20 city answers we captured, the roofer's own site was the source pointed at in 100% of them, so a thin site removes you before the contest starts.
How much does it cost to fix a roofing website for AI?
Nothing, if your web person already bills you a monthly fee, because every item here is a setting or a snippet, not a rebuild. The work below takes one afternoon of someone else's time and 30 minutes a week of yours to check.
