SEO for accountants in AI search: the listings and pages AI reads

The SEO version: which profiles, which pages, which structured data, and what to measure.

Published September 8, 2026 by KKV Labs LLC. $1,000 a month, 3-month minimum as it takes time to show results, named by AI in 90 days or every dollar back.

Short answer

SEO for accountants used to mean winning a blue link for accountant plus city. AI search asks for something else: facts an assistant can state without hedging. That means a Google Business Profile, Bing Places, your state CPA society directory, the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers and Yelp that all agree, one page per service, a fees page, and AccountingService and FAQPage structured data.

Accounting firm marketing and AI visibility do not compete. The same clean structure that helps a page rank is what lets a model quote you correctly.

45% of US consumers now use ChatGPT or another AI tool to find local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026).

What SEO for accountants means when the answer is a paragraph

For years the goal was position. Ten blue links, and the firms near the top got the calls. An assistant does not show ten options. It writes a few sentences and names two to five firms.

So the work moves from position to legibility. Can a model say, without qualification, that you prepare business returns in your county, that a partner is a CPA licensed in your state, and that a small business return starts at a stated figure. If it cannot, it says those things about a firm that made them easy to find.

The habit that has to change is hiding facts behind contact us for a quote. An assistant cannot call you, so a page with no ranges and no process gives it nothing to repeat.

The listings AI checks before it names a firm

Assistants cross check. A firm that says one thing on its website and another on a listing is one they hedge about, and hedging means naming somebody else.

  • Google Business Profile

Set the primary category to the work you actually want, add your services, hours and service area, and seed the questions section yourself.

  • Bing Places

ChatGPT search runs on Bing. Without a Bing listing, one of the three tools we measure starts from nothing. It is free and takes twenty minutes.

  • Your state CPA society directory

The listing that shows a professional body knows you exist. Check the firm name, address and contact details, and make the services match your website.

  • The IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers

A public federal record of who holds a recognised credential. Confirm your entry is there and correct, because assistants lean on official sources.

  • Yelp

Still cited in local answers for service businesses. Claim it, fix the hours, and keep the service list identical to everywhere else.

Write your firm name, address and phone once, in a text file, and paste it into every profile. Abbreviations and suite numbers have to match.

The pages that answer what clients actually ask

Search intent in accounting repeats itself: what does this cost, do I need a CPA or a bookkeeper, who handles my kind of entity, can somebody help with a letter from the IRS. Build a page for each.

  • One page per service

Business returns, personal returns, bookkeeping, payroll, S corp elections, tax planning, IRS notices and back taxes, audit support, new business setup. Not one services page listing nine things in a row.

  • A fees page

How you charge, hourly or flat or monthly, and a range for a small business return, a personal return and monthly bookkeeping. It is the page that gets quoted, because how much does a CPA charge is a question people genuinely ask.

  • An industries served page

Restaurants, contractors, medical practices, ecommerce sellers, landlords, and what is different about the books in each. That is how an assistant decides you fit.

  • A what to bring page

The documents a new client should gather and what happens at the first meeting. Process answers get quoted more often than sales copy.

Every page needs a short answer at the top and an FAQ block at the bottom. Describe the service, never the result. A page promising a bigger refund or a lower bill is one you cannot stand behind.

The structured data an accounting firm site should have

Markup does not buy a ranking. It removes ambiguity, and ambiguity is the reason an assistant skips a business.

  • AccountingService or ProfessionalService on the homepage and the contact page, with name, address, phone, hours and area served.

  • Service on each service page, so it reads as a specific offering rather than as prose.

  • FAQPage on the questions blocks you already wrote. It is the highest return markup on an accounting site, because it hands a model a matched question and answer.

  • Person on each staff bio, with the credential written out exactly, plus BreadcrumbList so the shape of the site is clear.

Validate the templates once. One broken block on a shared template silently switches off structured data across every page using it.

Credentials, reviews and what to measure

State the credential exactly, and in the same words everywhere: CPA licensed in Ohio, or enrolled agent, or accountant if there is no licence. A loose claim about being a tax expert is a licensing problem in most states.

Never promise a tax outcome. Not a bigger refund, not a lower bill, not a win on an audit or a notice. Write what you do, who you do it for, how you charge and how the work runs.

Reviews are read as text, not as a rating. She handles the bookkeeping and the payroll for my two locations is a sentence an assistant can use. Great service, five stars, is not. Never confirm in a public reply that somebody is a client.

Measure the way a client does. Pick ten questions a real client would ask, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and record who is named. Repeat the same ten every 30 days.

The short version

What to do this week.

Six things, in order. None of them needs a developer, an agency or a budget, and every one of them is checkable by you.

  1. 01Write your firm name, address and phone once and make every listing match it exactly.
  2. 02Claim Google Business Profile and Bing Places, then check your state CPA society and IRS preparer directory entries.
  3. 03Add AccountingService, Service and FAQPage structured data, then validate the templates.
  4. 04Publish one page for each service you want more of, answering in the first three sentences.
  5. 05Publish the fees page with real ranges and a plain explanation of how you charge.
  6. 06Run ten client questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode today, and repeat in 30 days.

Questions

What owners ask about this.

Is SEO for accountants the same as getting named by AI?
They share most of the work: a fast site, one page per service, consistent listings, fresh reviews. The target differs. SEO wants a position in a list of links. This wants your firm named inside a written answer, which rewards stated ranges and exact credentials.
Do we have to publish our fees?
You do not need a full price list, but you do need numbers. A range for a small business return, a range for a personal return, a monthly bookkeeping figure, and what moves them.
How should we describe our credential?
Exactly, and in the same words on every page and every listing. CPA licensed in Ohio. Enrolled agent. If a staff member holds no licence, say what they do instead. Do not let a page imply the whole firm holds a credential that one person holds.
Do we need a blog?
Only if it answers questions clients ask. One post a month on a real question, such as what an S corp election involves, beats weekly tax news no assistant will ever quote.
What does this cost if we hire it out?
We charge $1,000 a month with a 3-month minimum, because earning a place in AI answers takes that long, and we get a business named in AI answers within 90 days or refund every dollar. The pages, the listings and the structured data stay yours either way.

Find out which accounting firms AI names before you spend a dollar.

We run 10 real client questions for your city through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and send you the dated screenshots: who is named today, and whether the answer is still open. No call required.
