Free roofing playbook: the reviews

How to get roofing reviews every week without begging

Here is how to get roofing reviews every week without begging: stop treating the finished job as the only moment, and use the four other moments a roof gives you. A homeowner does not buy a roof often, so the old plan of one ask per job runs dry fast. We asked Google AI Mode for the best roofer in 60 US cities. Of the 43 answers whose opening line we kept, 20 say the roofers were picked for their customer reviews or ratings. Below are 10 jobs you can do yourself in 90 days.

What you need

  • Your Google review link, shortened, saved in every crew phone
  • A job list with dates, so you know who is 30 days out and who is a year out
  • One person who owns the asking, by name, not "the office"
  • 30 minutes a week for 90 days, and no money

Time: about 30 minutes a week, for 90 days. Cost: nothing. Every step below is free to do yourself.

Why this works

The answer reads your reviews.

Every number here is counted from our own files when this page is built, or linked to where it came from.

Your reviews sit on your Google profile, and an AI answer leans hard on that profile. In the 20 city answers we captured on September 15, 2026, a Google profile was pointed at in 95% of them. Then look at what the roofing answers actually say. We asked Google AI Mode "best roofer in [city]" in 60 US cities on September 10, 2026 and kept the opening line of 43 answers. 20 of them give customer reviews or ratings as the reason the roofers were picked, often next to brand certifications or licences.

The words inside a roofing review matter, not just the star. An answer that says a roofer is good at hail claims got that idea from somewhere, and the review text is the cheapest place for it to come from. Most roofers hide the result on their own site: only 22% of the 520 roofing home pages we read on September 11, 2026 show a review count, and only 10% show a star number. Our crawl counts what a page shows on one day, not how fresh the reviews behind it are, so none of this proves that one thing causes the other.

The plan

Four moments, ten roofing steps.

The first step sets up the ask. Four steps are the four moments in a roof job. The rest cover what to say, how to reply, and the rules that keep the reviews up.

  1. 01

Make the ask one tap, and put it in every truck

Get your Google review link, shorten it, and turn it into three things: a saved text message on every crew phone, a card in the glovebox of every truck, and a line at the bottom of your invoice. A homeowner with a new roof over their head will not go hunting for your page. Test the link from a phone you are not signed in on, because a broken link is why a good roofing week ends with no reviews.

How to check it workedThree roofers on your crew can send the review text in under ten seconds, from memory.

  2. 02

Ask at the estimate visit, before you have the job

The first moment is the free estimate, and almost nobody uses it. You climbed the ladder, you photographed the shingles, and the homeowner now knows more about their roof than they did an hour ago. Say this: "Whoever you hire, would you leave a line about the roof inspection? It helps other people on this street." Some will say yes even if they hire somebody else, and that review is honest and allowed, because they really did have the visit.

How to check it workedCount last month's estimates, count the reviews that mention the roof inspection, and set the share you want next month.

  3. 03

Ask on the day the shingles land in the drive

Delivery day is a good day. The shingle pallets land in the drive, the job is suddenly real, and the homeowner is relieved. Send the text that afternoon: "Your shingles are on site for tomorrow. If the booking part went smoothly, a quick line here helps us." This one catches the part of a roofing job most reviews never mention, which is how easy you were to book.

How to check it workedEvery roof with a delivery date has a text sent the same day, marked on the job sheet.

  4. 04

Ask 30 days later, after the first heavy rain

Put a note in the diary 30 days after every roof. Call, do not text: ask whether the roof and the attic stayed dry through the first big rain, and whether anything is bothering them. If it all went fine, ask then. This is the ask most roofers skip, and it is the strongest one, because the homeowner has now lived under the roof instead of just looking at it.

How to check it workedEvery roof finished 30 days ago has a call logged, with the answer written next to it.

  5. 05

Ask again on the anniversary of the storm

Storms are dated, and that date is a free reason to get back in touch. One year after the hail, send the homeowner the before and after photos of their own roof with one line: "A year since the hail. Your roof came through the winter fine." Then ask. Of the 520 roofing home pages we read, 69% carry storm, hail or insurance claim content and 42% say they help with a claim. So most roofers already sell storm work, and for them the anniversary list is long.

How to check it workedYou hold a list of storm jobs by date, and this month's anniversaries have all been contacted.

  6. 06

Tell the homeowner what to mention, in one short line

Never send a blank ask. Add one sentence: "If you mention the roof work, the town and the month, it helps the next person find us." That is not putting words in their mouth, it is telling them what is useful. A review saying "metal roof replacement in Akron after the June hail, crew was clean" carries facts a machine can use. A roofing review saying "great job guys" carries none.

How to check it workedRead your last ten roofing reviews. At least half should name a roof job and a town.

  7. 07

Reply to every review inside three days, in four lines

Write the reply the same week, and keep the shape the same every time. Line one, thank them by first name. Line two, name the work and the town: "Glad the flat roof on Oak Street is holding." Line three, one plain fact about the job, like the material or the warranty. Line four, one door left open: call us if anything shifts. Your replies sit on the same profile an AI answer reads, so they are free roofing content only you can write.

How to check it workedOpen your roofing profile and count unanswered reviews. The number should be zero, and the newest reply should be under three days old.

  8. 08

Answer a one-star review without touching the claim

Do not argue, and do not mention the insurance claim, the adjuster or the money. Say you are sorry it went that way, say one true thing about what happened, give a name and a number, and ask them to call. Keep it under four lines. Everyone reading it later is judging your temper, not the facts, and a calm reply on a bad roofing review can win more trust than ten happy ones.

How to check it workedEvery one-star review has a reply that names a person to call and says nothing about a claim.

  9. 09

Stay inside Google's rules, so the reviews you earn stay up

Google's own policy bans offering "payment, discounts, free goods and/or services" in exchange for a review (Google's Maps user content policy, read October 4, 2026). It also bans asking only the customers you know are happy, and content that is not based on a real experience. So no gift cards, no raffle, no free gutter clean, and no posting from the office tablet for someone else. Google says fake engagement will be removed, which means you pay twice and end up back where you started.

How to check it workedAsk your roofing crew what they offer for a review. If anyone names a gift or a discount, stop it this week.

  10. 10

Give every moment an owner, and ask once

Write the four moments on one sheet: estimate, delivery day, 30 days, storm anniversary. Put a name against each one, and set the rule that a homeowner is asked at one moment only, never twice in the same month. Read the sheet out at the Monday morning huddle and it takes two minutes. Without an owner, the asking happens in the busy roofing weeks and stops in the quiet ones, which is backwards.

How to check it workedEach of the four moments has a name against it, and last week every one of them happened at least once.

Questions

What roofers ask about reviews.

These are the questions roofing owners type about getting and answering reviews, answered in the same plain words as the steps above.

How do I ask a customer for a roofing review without being pushy?
Ask once, at a moment when the homeowner is already pleased, and make it one tap on their phone. The four moments above spread the asks across a year, so nobody gets asked twice in a month.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's own rules ban offering payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for a review, and Google says fake engagement will be removed. A free gutter clean for a review counts too.
Should a roofing company reply to bad reviews?
Yes, and quickly, because the reply is read by every homeowner who comes after. Keep it short, keep the insurance claim out of it, and move the argument to a phone call.
