How to get your law firm recommended by ChatGPT

Readable, verified and trusted

Every AI answer about local businesses rests on three things. Miss one and you drop out of the answer even when the other two are strong.

• Readable

  One page for each practice area, written in the words clients use rather than the words in a statute. A fee page that says whether the consultation is free and how you bill. Attorney bios with bar admissions. Attorney, LegalService and FAQPage structured data, so a machine reads the same facts a client does.

• Verified

  The same firm name, address, phone, hours and practice areas on your state bar profile, Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Google Business Profile and Bing Places. ChatGPT search runs on Bing, and Bing Places is the listing almost no firm in your city has ever touched.

• Trusted

  Recent reviews that name the kind of matter, attorneys quoted in local press or a local bar newsletter, and a site that has been updated this year. A stale copyright year in the footer is a small signal that a lot of small signals agree with.

Fix them in that order. A perfect directory profile pointing at a website AI cannot read still leaves you out of the answer.

The pages that get a firm named

AI answers questions. Your website has to contain the answers, on pages, in text a person could read out loud.

• One page per practice area

  DUI, custody, personal injury, estate planning, employment. Not a single services page listing twelve things in a row. The assistant needs a page it can point at for the exact matter the person described.

• A page about cost

  What the consultation costs, how you bill, and roughly what a retainer runs for the matters you take. Nobody wants to write this page. It is the page that gets quoted, because how much does a divorce lawyer cost in my city is a question people genuinely ask.

• A page for each place you serve

  Written about that county, that courthouse and that process. If you cannot say something true and specific about a place, do not make the page.

• Attorney bios

  Bar admissions, law school, years in practice, the matters each attorney handles, and a photo. This is what an assistant reads when it decides whether you are a real firm.

• An FAQ on every practice area page

  The questions clients ask on the first call, answered in three or four sentences each. What happens at the first hearing. How long this usually takes. What to bring.

Put the answer at the top of each page. Two or three sentences a reader, or a model, can lift whole and be right.

The directories and profiles AI reads for lawyers

Legal is one of the best documented industries online, and that cuts both ways. There are more places for your details to be wrong.

• Your state bar profile

  The one source that says you are licensed and in good standing. Check the address, the firm name and the status on it today. Assistants lean on it because it is official.

• Avvo

  Widely cited in legal answers. Claim the profile, fill in every practice area you actually want, and add your bar admissions and years in practice.

• Justia

  A free profile that is well indexed and often the first legal directory an assistant reaches for. Keep the practice areas identical to your website.

• FindLaw

  The paid one. Whether you pay or not, make sure whatever is listed matches everything else. An old suite number here is enough to make an assistant hedge.

• Google Business Profile

  Categories, hours, the service list, and the questions section you can seed yourself with the questions clients really ask.

• Bing Places

  Twenty minutes of work, and ChatGPT search runs on Bing. This is the single most skipped item on the list.

The job is not being everywhere. The job is being identical everywhere. One wrong phone number on one profile is enough for an assistant to name a firm it is more sure about.

Reviews, mentions and the advertising rules

Reviews that say what happened do far more than a star average. She handled my custody modification and explained every step is a sentence an assistant can use in an answer. Great service, five stars, is not.

Ask every client at the end of the matter, in writing, with a direct link. Do not offer anything in exchange and do not write the review for them. Most state bars treat that as a rules problem, and the review platforms remove them anyway.

Attorney advertising rules apply to everything on this list. Your state may require a disclaimer, may restrict words like specialist or expert unless you hold a certification, and generally does not allow you to promise a result. None of this work needs a promise. Say what you do, who you are and what it costs, and let the record speak. If your bar requires an advertising filing for new website copy, run the pages through it before publishing.
